Many Western musicians studied Indian music and instruments extensively; notably, George Harrison took sitar lessons and collaborated with Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar. Pozo became the first Latin percussionist in Gillespie's band and together they wrote the first jazz composition with a Latin flavor. One of the earliest attempts at this melding of genres was made by the British group Soft Machine. Combining elements from House (a type of disco music based on Funk, with fragments of other recordings edited in electronically) with acoustic, electronic and sampled sound to create a popular and populist variety of contemporary Jazz.
