The description is set out in complex number form and can be displayed with an Argand diagram (For more info see here). It is obvious (and indeed easy to show by integration of the equation of motion) that v never changes sign as equal periods of acceleration and deceleration alternate (ironically, this is treated in some detail in Berkeley Physics Course Vol.1 (Mechanics)). But if we slow the process down and see where each photon lands on the screen we can never tell ahead of time where the next one will show up.
